LACFLA’s In-Person Basic Collaborative Training will be held on the following dates and times:

Wednesday 8/17/2022 9:00am – 4:30pm

Thursday 8/18/2022 9:00am – 4:30pm

Friday 8/19/2022 8:30 -11:30 and 12:30 -3:30 ( 2 sessions of 3 hours each for practicing)  Register Here for the Practice Session ONLY

The course is designed for Attorneys, Financial Professionals and Mental Health Professionals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Be introduced to the theories, practices and skills needed to begin collaborative practice.
  • Learn the roles each profession (Attorney, Financial Specialist and Mental Health Professional) plays in the process and what their functions are.
  • See demonstrations of how the professionals come together as a team to support the clients in dissolving their marriage and restructuring their family.
  • Discuss with other attendees how to implement Collaborative Practice.
  • Have the opportunity to role play case scenarios to practice your new skills.
  • Meet the minimum training standards set by the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals.

Credits for CEU’s for MFT, LPCC, LEP and/or LCSW attendees.

MCLE’s credit is pending.

 Policies:          

  • *Course meets the qualifications for hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral LACFLA Provider # PCE3081
  • Course completion certificates will be awarded based on attendance indicated on sign-in sheets at the completion of the course evaluations.
  • Fees will be refunded if canceled 48 hours prior to the course start date via email to info@lacfla.org. Cancellations within 48 hours will be credited toward the next Basic Training Workshop.

Faculty:

Stephanie Maloney, CPA, CDFA, Chairperson, is a financial who is President and owner of Peace Talks Mediation Services and she serves as their Collaborative Financial Mediator. Stephanie is a Collaborative Divorce trainer for Los Angeles Collaborative Family Law Associates and Collaborative Divorce Institute of Arizona and an experienced mediation trainer with Peace Talks Mediation Services.

Kevin Chroman, Esq. is a Loyola Law School graduate (2000) and presently runs a Collaborative Mediation Clinic at Loyola Law School where he is an adjunct professor. He is a UC Berkeley graduate with a Master’s degree in English Literature from DePaul University. Kevin is a Family Law practitioner; whose practice focuses exclusively on Collaborative Law and Mediation. Presently, he is on the Board of Los Angeles Collaborative Family Law Association (LACFLA), as well as the state-wide Collaborative organization CPCal (Collaborative Practice California), where he assists in promoting collaborative practice.

James E. Walton, Ph.D., LMFT is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, who holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology who is a Family Divorce Specialist and Collaborative Divorce Coach who has been in private practice over 23 years. He is on the Board of Directors of LACFLA. He is the co-chair of the Advanced Training Program for LACFLA. He is also the president of Family Divorce Solutions in the San Fernando Valley. He is a statewide speaker for CPcal on the topics of Bias and Diversity. He is a frequent guest lecturer for collaborative law classes at UCLA, Loyola and Southwestern’s law schools and is a volunteer divorce coach at Loyola Law School.

Fern Topas Salka, JD is a Certified Family Law Specialist, former Chair of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Family Law Section, and a “Super Lawyer” in Los Angeles Magazine from the inception of the program in 2004 through the present. She has 30 years of experience in advocacy work and four decades of work in consensual dispute resolution. She is a co-founder of LACFLA and has been the longstanding co-chair of the state Bar Family Law Section Consensual Dispute Resolution Standing Committee. She has taught law school and lectured and written extensively about family law, marriage and conflict resolution.

Jeffery S. Jacobson, JD, CFLS is a partner at the Family Law firm of Jacobson Scully Shebby LLP, with offices in West Los Angeles and Hermosa Beach. His practice is devoted exclusively to Family Law, with a special focus on Consensual Dispute Resolution. He is certified as a Specialist in Family Law by the State bar of California board of Legal Specialization. Los Angeles Magazine recognized him as a Super Lawyer for 2011-2016 and a Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2005-2010.

Carol R. Hirshfield, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist who has over 25 years of experience working with children, adults and their families on both the East and West Coasts. Her expertise includes child development, populations who have special needs, such as learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, developmental disabilities, and autism, and services for families who are engaged in high conflict divorce.

James M. Hallett, JD is an attorney and is a graduate of Yale University and the University Of California Berkley School Of Law. Board Certified as a specialist in both Criminal and Family Law, Jim is Martindale-Hubbell rated AV and listed in Super Lawyers since 2007. Jim has been president of multiple bar associations, has appeared personally for oral argument three times in the California Supreme Court, and has handled to completion the defense of over 30 death penalty cases. He is a founder and past president of A Better Divorce, Secretary of LACFLA, and has handled to completion over 100 collaborative divorce cases.

Mary Ann Aronsohn, LMFT is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist since 1989. She has been a Divorce Coach within the Collaborative Model since 2001. In private practice in South Pasadena, she works with a wide range of family law matters with a special focus on Co-Parenting. She has taught her own private co-parenting course since 2001, and does a lot of high-conflict divorce work. However, her heart is in CDR, and she consequently participates energetically in local collaborative organizations. Mary Ann is a compassionate therapist and strong advocate for full-team collaborative work.

Leon F. Bennett, JD has over 30 years’ experience in the field of Family Law as a Mediator, Collaborator and Litigator. He has gained the reputation of being a strong advocate for his clients, whether during negotiations, mediation or trial. He is also highly respected for his ability to resolve many matters without lengthy litigation. He is the co-founder of the San Fernando Valley Collaborative Professionals, a group of attorneys, financial specialists and mental health professionals who employ a non-adversarial, cooperative method to family law proceedings. This non-litigious approach often results in swift and cost-effective resolutions. He is currently the President of the Los Angeles Collaborative Family Law Association

Jill Cohen, JD has a Family Mediation and Collaborative Law practice in Beverly Hills. Jill began her legal career as a corporate attorney negotiating a wide range of transactions. She transitioned to family mediation in 2003 because she was interested in helping people find a better way to resolve disputes affecting them personally.

Paula A. March, LCSW, BCD has had more than 20 years of experience in social work combining direct clinical care with teaching and management responsibilities. For the last thirteen years, she has been supporting families through the stress of divorce by providing services such as mediation on child custody issues, reunification counseling, parenting plan coordination and collaborative divorce coaching.
